Elevating the Central America’s Northern Triangle: Kamala Harris Must Nip the Evil in the Bud

“Our focus is to deal with the root causes, and I am looking forward to traveling, hopefully as my first trip, to the Northern Triangle.”

(Kamala Harris)

Unlike the previous administrations, this time, the Biden administration seems to portray the notion of readiness to discuss the root causes of the migration that has become one of the persisting problems for the United States.

The immigrants’ infiltration at the US Southern border continues to rise, putting the US capacity of adjusting those immigrants to a chokehold.

This time, to address the genesis of this problem, Kamala Harris is about to fly into the Northern Triangle. This trip can initiate a new era of US involvement in the region.

As the lack of facilities in these countries is the primary reason for all the migrations into the United States, Kamala Harris is expected to announce the developmental plans during her visit to these countries.

The Northern Triangle consists of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, where China has not yet made its bid for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

As President Joe Biden has already announced his ambitions to counter China in its BRI ambitions by calling England’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson, this is the time for them to actualize this plan by initiating the developmental programs in these countries alongside Mexico.

While on the one hand, it will curb the immigration at the US Southern borders, on the other hand, it will also improve the US soft power in the region.

Investing in the Northern Triangle Human Resources: The Only Way to Tackle the Menace

Northern Triangle countries are severely hit by poverty, which is the only reason for their mass movements towards the United States. Currently, Guatemala is the fifth most country in the world for malnutrition, for which the masses there are being pushed for their migration to the United States.

Perhaps Harris going to these countries is the only way the US can tackle the everlasting border crisis.

The United States has to spend a handsome amount of money on the immigrants anyways. For instance, if the United States allows them in the country, the administration has to oversee them. If the US wants to stop them at the border, the administration has to spend big money on stopping the migration.

However, if the United States wants to reach the genesis of the actual problem, investing in the human resources of these countries will pay back.

Any development plan that aims to create job opportunities for the masses is likely to yield positive results for the United States as well as these Northern Triangle countries.

The United States can invest in a variety of domains to avert the border crisis. These investments should include better connectivity between the major cities.

Apart from that, if Kamala Harris wants to eradicate the menace from its very roots, social welfare programs will probably not be the long-term solution.

It is in the interest of everyone that the US must try to provide sustainable loans to the country and initiate the Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) in the receiving countries.

In parallel, the US can set up a handful of the in-demand industries in the region to build a sustainable model in these underdeveloped countries.

Connecting the Dots: Harris’ Visit to the Region is an Opportunity to Start Biden’s Anti-BRI Model

Uplifting the Northern Triangle countries is the easiest way for the Biden administration to initiate its anti-BRI model.

With this, the United States can make a statement to the world announcing that an expansionist attempt by China will be tackled with full force.

While the GOP has already started criticizing Kamala Harris for recent developments, she has to make her trip with zest and zeal and fix the evil in the bud.

Right now, Kamala Harris is ready to fly to Mexico and Guatemala, while the other two countries will be addressed later on.

A step-by-step approach will give the Biden administration more avenues to explore in this war against poverty in the Northern Triangle countries.

Final Thoughts

For the Biden administration to have an impact due to his effective foreign policy, connecting the dots is a must thing to do. This is the reason why Biden must connect this visit to his previous announcement of the anti-BRI model.

Doing so will portray a message to other countries as well that the Biden administration is ready to walk the talk.

This way, the UK can also come on the bandwagon with the United States in the Northern Triangle region and beyond, hence curbing US immigration in big numbers.
